Convert an existing issue into a pull request

By default, when you create a pull request, GitHub assigns a new issue number to the newly-created pull request. While reviewing the pull request, the reviewer has to look at the issue to understand the requirement, and then needs to follow the conversation in the pull request. This can get frustrating. When that pull request is merged, then the original issue is still open and we have to manually close it. Or we have to ask everyone to remember to put closes #xxx.

To get around this problem, we convert an existing issue into a pull request.

stackoverflow has many different solutions as to how to convert an existing issue into a pull request.

Note that GitHub has deprecated this feature, but we like it and we will continue to use it as long as it is available.
